Charles, Cane, Illinois, USA, d. 21 January 1944 in Bemidji, Beltrami,
Minnesota USA (Source: Death Certificate State of Minnesota, 541, Register
12.).
His father died when he was 6; he was raised by uncle, Alpheus S. Williams.He
graduated from Yale when he was 15,(substantiated?)and his uncle bound
him out to a carpenter in Detroitbut he skipped bondage after his uncle
Alpheus went to Washington D.C.become a general in the union army in 1860.
He returned to MN and enlisted in military. He was a bugler under Company
"C" Second Regiment Minnesota Cavalry Volunteers during the
Civil War . He was a School teacher at Montevideo, MN, carpenter who uilt
grain elevators from Minneapolis, MN. to Aberdeen, S. Dakota. Homesteaded
at Becida, MN.
Charles's family must have moved from Connecticut sometime around 1860,
to Deerfield, MN., as 2 sisters died there, this is where he lived at
the time he met andwas married to Lavina Clark, by Rev. Mr. Brown..

Regt. Minnesota Cavalry Volunteers (Source: National Archives, Civil War
Division, Claim for Pension for service,, Pension certificate number 649475,
Applied for pension August 1890. He enlisted at Deerfield, MN. and was
discharged at Fort Snelling as a trumpeter.Afdavits in pension file include
marriage information and dates of birth of all his children.) Occupation:
School teacher, carpenter
