Southworth, of Deep River,He successfully carried on the business of
pump manufacturing for many years, and also engaged in farming. A Republican
in politics, he served in many of the town offices, was a director in
both Deep River banks, a selectman several terms, and represented the
Saybrook District in the Legislature for several terms. When a young
man he was an active worker in the Baptist Church, a member of the choir,
and was connected with the official school board.

Mr.John Halliday is a liberal Republican in politics, but does not aspire
to public office, although he has acceptably served as a member of the
school board for eleven years. Socially he is connected with Mt. Olive
Lodge, F. & A. M.; Mather Post, G. A. R.; and Es--sex Lodge, A.
O. U. W. Both he and his wife are consistent members of the Baptist
Church, and are regarded among the most highly esteemed residents of
their community.
